Around 19 persons including the residents of Santiniketan , Bolpur traders, present and ex -students of Visva Bharati spoke in the meeting held by the Birbhum district magistrate. They expressed their concern over the destruction of Tagore tradition by constructing high wall around Santiniketan but surprisingly not a single of them condemned the worst ever vandalism that Santiniketan witnessed. One of the participants was Supriyo Thakur, a former headmaster of Patha Bhaban and related to Rabindranath. He too didn’t protest the demolition of a gate of the university. In the meeting Thakur said , ‘ The way boundary walls are being constructed is against the emotion of Tagore admirers. We didn’t see this Santiniketan during our childhood.’
The meeting held by the district magistrate Birbhum to resolve the on going impasse at Visva Bharati lost is significance because the main “stake holder” Visva Bharati authority did not take part in the meet. On Tuesday night through a prees release the university authority clearly expressed their grudge over the ‘inaction’ of the district administration and police to avert Monday’s untoward incident of vandalism.
Apart from the district magistrate Moumita Godara Birbhum police super Shyam Singh and TMC MP from Bolpur Asit Mal were present in the meet. Supriya Takur and some other residents of Bolpur also took part in the meet.
The meeting was held at Bolpur SDO office
